JON HERINGTON - NEWS

Greetings, everyone.

It's been a long time since the last news update, and I thank you for your patience and perseverance. In this case, no news has been good news for me, if not this website of mine.

I've been busy on the road, first for the Everything Must Go tour with Steely Dan, this time as the so-called musical director as well as guitarist, an honor more than a job, since with our fearless leaders Donald and Walter plus an amazing bunch of musicians like we had, there's not much directing required. A thrill like no other, the tour was the closest thing I've experienced to musical nirvana. A sad footnote to the tour, however, was the loss of Cornelius Bumpus, who died in February this year.

I was home for a day and then dropped right into rehearsals for the Bette Midler Kiss My Brass tour. Shows began in December of 2003 and ended in March 2004.
A large, versatile, and talented band was only part of the huge production, with an amazing set, great crew, video, lights, sound, music, comedy, etc., etc., etc., and full houses in the biggest arenas all over the states. All that plus the hardest working human dynamo of a performer I've ever encountered, the divine Miss M herself, made it an unforgettable experience.

A little over a month back in New York, and then I'll be on my way to Japan to play the Blue Note clubs there with Boz Scaggs for the month of May. It is shaping up to be a tour featuring a combination of hits, blues tunes, and standards that will take advantage of the wide ranging talents of a great band of musicians backing the inimitable Boz on vocals and guitar. We'll also be doing a three week run through the California wine country in July, so all you interested folks stateside stay on the lookout for dates, please.

Plans are under way for a website revision, so stay tuned.

Thanks for checking in.

Old news...

Jon is back from beautiful Spain and a fantastically received series of concert and club performances there with Bill Evans and Big Fun. Stay tuned for any more dates with Bill that may come up.

Two new CDs featuring Jon as both guitarist and composer have been released.

One is Dennis Chambers' new esc records release, "Outbreak."

On "Outbreak” , his Stateside debut as a leader, Dennis slams home some solid grooves in the company of such heavyweights as guitarists John Scofield, Jon Herington, Nick Moroch and Dean Brown, bassists Will Lee, Gary Willis, Matthew Garrison and his old P-Funk rhythm tandem mate Rodney ‘Skeet’ Curtis, saxophonists Michael Brecker, Bobby Malach and Aaron Heick, trumpeter Randy Brecker and longtime colleague and keyboardist Jim Beard, who produced the New York session.

While the emphasis is clearly on groove throughout "Outbreak” , Dennis does give drum fanatics plenty to drool over on Jon Herington’s dramatic "Paris On Mine", the guitarist’s nod to John McLaughlin’s "New York On My Mind" (from 1978’s Electric Guitarist ), as well as on the rampaging title track in which he goes toe to toe with Michael Brecker for the album’s kinetic peak.

Also, for a totally different side of Jon's guitar playing, check out the new Sunnyside Records release, Michael Leonhart's "Slow".

Here's what Michael has to say on the liner notes:

The idea for this album finally clicked late one night on a tour bus driving along a highway somewhere in North America. Sharing the bus with six other band mates, I decided to retreat to the back lounge with my acoustic guitar for a little quiet time. A little while later Jon Herington popped his head through the door, picked up the guitar now lying on the seat next to me as I sat watching the open road go by, and began to play some old jazz ballads. Performing five nights a week with him as part of Steely Dan's 2000 U.S. tour, I had grown quite accustomed to hearing his ferocious guitar solos night after night, but I had yet to hear this softer, romantic side. It was then and there that I began putting together the final pieces for a duo album I had begun thinking about a few years back. After having recorded "Aardvark Poses" and "Glub Glub vol. 11", the former a pianoless quartet of jazz originals, the latter a film-ish collage of short pieces with large ensembles, I was eager to switch gears and record an intimate collection of some of my favorite songs.

So in the fall and winter of 2000, Jon and I began feeling our way around the songs I had chosen. Looking to add some depth and variety to the traditional duo setting, it became clear we would record some of the songs live in the studio, while other songs we would subtly embellish with additional guitars and voices. After all, putting Ellington next to Black Sabbath, Monk next to Mancini, we needed to stray a little from any formulas. The result is "Slow". Enjoy. "

EVEN OLDER NEWS...

Congratulations to Steely Dan for their four Grammys! This means Jon has played on the Best Pop Vocal Album & Best Album of the Year; Two Against Nature

Jon also played on the Grammy-winning cast album of the Elton John Broadway hit Aida and is shortly embarking on a month's tour with Boz Scaggs.

Honorable mention...

Darren DeVivo, disc jockey for WFUV in the New York City area, has given Jon's new disc, "Like So," an honorable mention in his "Top 10" list for the year 2000.

Under his "Number Two" listing he writes.... " Steely Dan / Two Against Nature: It was worth the 20-year wait. Picking up where they left off in 1980 with Gaucho, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker craftanother collection of perfectly executed songs with all the Steely Dan trademarks. Honorable mention: Steely Dan guitarist Jon Herington cut a fine solo album called Like So. It shows his NYC pop rock smarts, at times like Marshall Crenshaw." (from WFUV's website)
